A few medical professionals claim that chiropractic care can cause cerebral vascular accidents (strokes) from adjusting a person’s neck. However, there is no evidence indicating that chiropractic is unsafe. All legal cases to date have failed to show that the injuries were connected to chiropractic care. Still, over the past couple of decades there has been more of a “witch hunt” against chiropractic by certain people in the medical profession.
False Claims By the AMA
In 1990, the American Medical Association (AMA) was found guilty of conspiring with other medical organizations in a lengthy, systematic, and deliberate plan to disseminate false and libellous information about the safety and efficacy of Chiropractic. It had also forbade its members to refer patients to chiropractors.
The court prohibited the AMA from disseminating any more lies about Chiropractic but the court could not stop the medical and pharmaceutical industries from using their influence to get newspapers, magazines and television news to do that job for them. This is the prime reason you still see people today under the false impression that neck adjustments are dangerous.
The Truth About Chiropractic
In reality, adjusting a person’s spine is extremely safe. Not one person has died as a result of chiropractic, compared to the 200,000+ Americans every year who die from medicine (reported by the AMA). There is a 1 in 13 million chance of having a cerebral vascular accident from Chiropractic care. To put this in perspective, you have a greater chance of being hit by lightning any day of your life, and you have a much greater chance of dying from taking aspirin.
Malpractice Coverage
Another measure of safety can be determined by the malpractice rates that health care professionals pay for the same coverage. Insurance companies consider medical doctors to have the greatest risk and so these doctors pay more for their coverage than any other health care profession. Chiropractors pay the least amount per month for the same insurance coverage. Chiropractic is actually considered to have the safest record of all the health care professions (including optometry).
